Northland Short Film Competition Launched

The Dargaville Community Cinema Trust who operate the Anzac Theatre in Dargaville are launching Northland’s first ever short film competition.

For the last five years the Trust has run a short film competition in the Kaipara aimed at fostering creativity and participation in the visual arts.

“There have been some exciting and even ‘out there’ entries over the last five years,” said Graeme Ramsey, Chair of the Trust.

Now the Trust is expanding the competition and making it Northland wide.

There are three sections in the competition for 2015:
The open section is open to all ages on any topic. First prize in this section is $1,000.

The school age section is open to individuals or a group of school age people on a topic of their choice. First prize here is $500.

As this is the centennial year of Gallipoli, a special section on the theme of Gallipoli with a first prize of $1,000 is also offered. This is supported by the RSA.

“With modern technology anyone can make a quality film that will entertain. There is a huge amount of energy and creativity in Northland and we hope this will be shown by entrants to this competition,” said Jacoba Puharich, Trust Secretary.

The Anzac Theatre is based in Dargaville’s War Memorial Museum and has in its foyer a Roll of Honour for World War I and a giant embroidered flag commemorating those who left the district to go to war.

“It is fitting that we have created a special Gallipoli category for this year’s film competition,” said Jacoba.

Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, originality, entertainment value and technical ability.

Entrants have until 30 June to submit their entry and further details can be found on the Anzac Theatre website: www.anzactheatre.co.nz.

Graeme Ramsey said this is an exciting new venture for Northland.

“We hope that the prizes on offer will encourage people to get out there and be creative.”
