DISRUPTING THE NARRATIVE

Disrupting the Narrative is a week-long event incorporating an exhibition of contemporary art, historical material and public talks that explore resistance to New Zealand's involvement in the First World War.

WEEK TWO: 27 April - 3 May 2015
MAKING PEACE

Artists, musicians, speakers and performers will engage with members of public to create a dialogue around the idea of Making Peace. There will be a song writing workshop, a dance performance, an exhibition and forums for discussion.

“A Photo Will Not Do” explores the process of photorealistic drawing by two local artists; Jaden Cairncross and Terèse Fitzgerald. Vehicles, houses and machinery are subject to an infatuation with detail where the transition from visual information to the brain and onto the hand creates entirely new scenes which exist only on paper. The scrutiny applied to recreate textures and tones can be received as nonsensical – a photocopy achieves more accurate replications – but it is the highly unpronounced shifts from the original visual information which create the drawings’ sense of awe. A photo simply will not do.

ASYLUM | JAMES HARCOURT

The name of this show is Asylum. We are referring to climate change refugeeship. Our question from here is 'Where are we going ?'

Somewhat of a birth of a new folklore from Aro Valley artist James Harcourt, the Asylum Seekers are here to represent people, animals and flora in respect of contemporary environment degradation and the effects on not just us, but also the wider family of living entities.

Each mask is made from the leaf of the Nikau palm and embellished with paint, papier maché and applied material. These characters will perform as part of CubaDupa and Aro Fair in a dance/percussion piece.

In 'The Asylum (Thistle Hall)', the Asylum Seekers will be in conference around 'The Declaration of Consciousness' looking toward progressive relationships with the Earth in a loving, respectful and sustainable manner.
