Laurie In Top Form at HOY

Katie Laurie has had the perfect start to her Farmlands Horse of the Year Show.
Today the mum from Mystery Creek won the first major class of the show, the Virbac Equine Norwood Gold Cup aboard last year's Olympic Cup winner, backing up her win this morning in the Mitavite Six Year Old of the Year aboard Dunstan Casebrooke Lomond. It is the second time Springfield has won the cup.

The historic Norwood Gold Cup – first presented in 1967 – attracted a starry 31-strong class, which included former Olympians Daniel Meech (Hawke's Bay/Clevedon) with his imported mare Queen of Dance WHS and Maurice Beatson (Dannevirke) with Schimmel Warrior and the former dressage horse Conyers, as well as teenagers Briar Burnett-Grant (Taupo) aboard Fiber Fresh Ngahiwi Telephonic and Emily Hayward-Morgan (Te Awamutu) on AP Ninja.
Seven came through to the jump-off, including 14-year-old Burnett-Grant, who may well be the youngest ever competitor in the class.

First out was Meech and the 12-year-old Queen of Dance WHS (owned by Meech and Valerie Twist) who set a cracking pace, riding nice tight lines and wasting nothing underfoot. They came home clear in 42.24 seconds.

Next out was Laurie, New Zealand's golden girl of showjumping on Dunstan Lucca who again rode brilliant lines to go clear in 42.44. But it was her chestnut Dunstan Springfield who managed to slice those nano seconds off the time to leave everything up in 42.14.

Others followed, with Jesse Linton (Hastings) and Strathcarron Zaurak riding the round of their lives to bag just four faults in 46.19, Brad Cunningham (Christchurch) on Kiwi Crusher who also picked up four faults in 47.17, and Burnett-Grant with her seven faults in 57.19.

The Gerrit Beker (Tauranga) designed course fitted the bill, bringing out the best in the riders and entertaining the spectators.

Laurie was full of praise for the course.

“I love Gerrit's courses,” she said. “Bart (Springfield) was very good out there – he likes it in this arena.”

But she had picked Lucca to take the honours.

“Lucca is nippy, quick and really fast, but I just underestimated it a little I guess. Bart is a lot more slow moving. We had to work hard to go that fast. Bart is not the bravest in the world, and everything has to go perfectly for him.”

She also started Dunstan Breeze in the class, and was unlucky to have the last fence down.
“I was very happy with her today.”

It is the third time Laurie has won the cup – having also triumphed in 2013 on Springfield and 2010 on Corofino. Her father Jeff McVean has also won it twice – in 1978 aboard Blue Gift and in 1996 on Guinness.
