A Black Caps Fan Guide to Melbourne
The Black Caps made history this week qualifying for the 2015 Cricket World Cup Final. As the nation waits with baited breath for the final showdown this Sunday, Kiwis are getting ready to descend upon Melbourne Cricket Ground to cheer the Black Caps on.
To help Black Caps fans, now off their home turf, navigate and make the most of the city, Tourism Victoria has compiled a Black Caps Fan Guide to Melbourne.
1. GETTING THERE
Can’t beat the crowds? Join them! Trains will
be running from any railway station in the CBD – take the
Hurstbridge or Epping lines. Three tram routes will ensure
you arrive safely at the Melbourne Cricket Ground – No.
75, No. 48 and No. 70. Fancy a walk? Follow the crowds along
the banks of the Yarra River and over the William Barrack
Bridge to Melbourne Cricket Ground, a mere 15 minute walk
from the CBD.
2. FUEL UP
To help get through the nail biting action on
the field, fuel up beforehand at one of Melbourne’s
impressive range of eateries from dumplings in Chinatown,
Kiwi run Huxtaburger on Collins Street or grab a bite
close to Stadium at Magic Mountain Saloon,
Gradi or Trailer Park. Looking for a
show-stopper to please your lady friend? Try Gazi,
Chin Chin or Tonka.
3.
WATERING HOLES
For pre-drinks, or for
those not lucky enough to have a ticket to the game, get
amongst the action in some of Melbourne’s renowned sports
bars including Duke of Wellington, Young &
Jacksons and Melbourne Public – all will be
screening the action live with an atmosphere and crowd
rivalling that at the MCG.
4.
WHAT ELSE
Beyond the cricket, Melbourne
has a vibrant and jam-packed calendar of events for Kiwis
visiting the city. Before or after the excitement of the
cricket why not check out the Melbourne International
Comedy Festival, Shifting Gear: Design Innovation and
the Australian Car or Disney Presents The Lion
King.
5. MELBOURNE AND MORE
Have an extra day or two to spare in Melbourne? Why not get out of town to explore what regional Victoria has to offer. Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Daylesford are all located within a 2-hour drive from the CBD. Explore the cellar doors in Victoria’s wine region, Yarra Valley; play a game of golf at one of Mornington Peninsula’s 19 golf courses or relax at one of Daylesford’s relaxing mineral springs.
