Muscle Mouth aims to Triumph with intense new work

a little bit of obsessiona little bit of grandnessa lot of dramatic sweat

Ross McCormack, direct from Belgium’s acclaimed Les Ballets C de la B company, performs and directs Triumphs and Other Alternatives , a new multidisciplinary work presented by Muscle Mouth. The world première takes place 22 April 2015 at the Hannah Playhouse, Wellington .

McCormack formed his company Muscle Mouth with a team of collaborators upon being commissioned by the 2014 New Zealand Festival to create AGE , which was acclaimed by critics and audiences; “It’s the kind of contemporary dance work that many of us crave and very rarely get” noted Radio New Zealand.

Triumphs and Other Alternatives is a departure from AGE . This new work collides sculpture with gutsy performance to create an original and visceral new style of Physical Movement Theatre. The show explores the obsessiveness and traps of the creative process, demonstrating a delusional joy that the act of creating can bring forth. Performing with McCormack are dancers Emily Adams (Auckland) and James Vu Ahn Pham ( Melbourne), winner of “Best Male Dancer” at the 2014 Helpmann Awards - an award won by McCormack himself over ten years ago.

McCormack recently returned to New Zealand from Europe where he enjoyed a stellar international performance career. “ After touring overseas for nearly fifteen years I am incredibly excited to perform and present my work to New Zealand audiences and showcase the talent and vision that Muscle Mouth has.” says McCormack. Triumphs and Other Alternatives also features original light work by designer Natasha James and sound design by sonic artist Jason Wright.
