CITY TALKS: Paul Kerr-Hislop & Bougainville Library Project

CITY TALKS: Paul Kerr-Hislop and the Bougainville Library Project — Mr Pip returns

Hear and see how Mr Pip’s fictional library was made real by Architect Paul Kerr-Hislop in Bougainville

City Gallery Wellington, Civic Square

Monday 20 April, 6pm

Koha entry for Vanuatu

City Talks, an initiative of the New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington Branch and presented in partnership with City Gallery Wellington, are back for 2015.

This month, learn how the fictional library in Lloyd Jones’s novel Mr Pip was made real in Bougainville by architect, Paul Kerr-Hislop. Paul will describe the background, process and building of the library and his journey to the opening ceremony in June 2013.

The new library symbolises a gift of literacy from the people of New Zealand to the people of Bougainville. The project was in recognition of the hardships suffered during the civil war, described so brilliantly in Mr Pip.

Paul graduated from Victoria University in 1982 serving his apprenticeship as a graduate architect with Craig, Craig, Moller before embarking overseas to London where he worked on the Museum of the Moving Image at Avery Associates Architects. Since returning in 1986, Paul has been working in Wellington.

The talk will be followed by refreshments.

All funds raised by the koha entry will be donated to assist with aid in Vanuatu, our Pacific neighbour recently decimated by super storm Cyclone Pam.
