Southern Sinfonia’s “A Sea Symphony”
There are many musical treats in store for Southern Sinfonia’s 2015 audiences. The first of the series concerts contains one such treat: the orchestra’s first performance of Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony. ‘Behold, the sea!’ – the electrifying opening announces this magnificent choral work. To help evoke a vast seascape, the large orchestra will be complemented by an enormous choir of well over one-hundred voices from City Choir Dunedin, complemented by singers from the Auckland Choral Society (the two choirs recently sang this work in Auckland).
Soprano Anna Leese and acclaimed Polish baritone Marcin Bronikowski (courtesy of NZ Opera) join the massive combined City Choir Dunedin and Auckland Choral, under the inspired direction of Nicholas Braithwaite.
Modi Deng, a Dunedin pianist who is heading to Auckland for further study, will have her exquisite touch and technical ease to the fore in Rachmaninov’s first piano concerto which opens this concert.
The concert marks the end of Sydney Manowitz’s tenure as Concertmaster after just over 20 distinguished years, the longest tenure for any NZ professional orchestra’s Concertmaster.
