Buskers line up to compete for your vote

Buskers line up to compete for your vote

May is New Zealand Music Month and to celebrate Mainstreet Wanganui is busy organising the third annual ‘Great Busk Off.’ An opportunity to showcase local talent as they compete for your votes to become Whanganui’s favourite busker. The Busk Off has been a hit each year since the inaugural event held in 2013. It has seen an array of performers taking part from toddlers through to seasoned musicians playing all genres of music.

For those who haven’t attended the busk off before here’s how it works. Head down to the CBD between 11am and 2pm on Saturday 2 May. Collect a map of where all the buskers are located and purchase voting tokens for $1 each at one of four token stations. These will be located on Victoria Avenue at: Majestic Square, opposite Jolt in the bottom block of the Avenue, at the corner of Victoria Ave and Ridgway Street and at the corner of Victoria Ave and Guyton Street. Set off around the CBD to hear all the different buskers representing a variety of ages, instruments and styles. Place your tokens in the hat/case/box of the busker you like the most. At 2pm all musicians will make their way to Majestic Square where their tokens will be counted.

The busker with the most tokens wins $500, the busker with the second highest number wins $300 and third wins $200 plus all buskers will have their tokens paid out on the day ensuring no busker goes home empty handed.

“We always get great feedback about this event and the buzz it creates in the CBD,” says Mainstreet Marketing Manager Elise Goodge, “We have some past entrants and some new entrants already signed up to take part this year so it is going to be a good mix plus we have some new locations on the map.”

There are still spaces available for buskers who wish to participate so if you are interested contact Mainstreet Wanganui on 348 0157 or email promotions@mainstreetwanganui.co.nz. You can download a map of busking and token table locations from www.mainstreetwanganui.co.nz.
