Treble Cone Book Wins International Skiing History Association’s Award
The Treble Cone (Wanaka, New Zealand) history book written by Matt Conway and released by Treble Cone Ski Area in Wanaka in winter 2014, was recognised by the International Skiing History Association at their annual Skiing History Week, held over the past week in Steamboat Springs in Colorado.
‘The International Skiing History Association Awards, first established in 1993, are presented annually for outstanding contributions to the historical record that includes ski history books, filmmaking, television, journalism and academic articles’ SkiingHistory.org website.
The Treble Cone book received the International Skiing History Association’s Skade Award which is ‘presented for an outstanding work on regional ski history’.
Bringing the book to life took eight years and saw author Matt Conway speak with dozens of people about their involvement with Treble Cone, resulting in 750 pages of transcribed interviews.
'Along the way I heard about everything from the heart-thumping mission to blast the last section of road to hellish encounters with nutcracker rope tows to the installation of world-class lifts and facilities to the sight of a Spitfire periodically buzzing the slopes before awestruck skiers and boarders' author Matt Conway.
‘Sincere thanks to the International Skiing History Association for honouring the published history of Treble Cone. In recognising this book, they’ve more importantly honoured the passionate efforts of a stubborn group of Kiwis and most especially the men who got things rolling in the late 1960s - Treble Cone founders Rod Aubrey, Ray Cleland, Murray Raffills, Don Ross and Sir Tim Wallis’.
The Treble Cone book is available for $49 from the Treble Cone Wanaka Office, on-mountain at Treble Cone Ski Area during the approaching snow season, at Paper Plus in Wanaka or Dunedin, or online with postage around New Zealand, to Australia and the United States at http://www.treblecone.com/tcbook
Treble Cone won New Zealand’s Best Ski Resort in 2013 and again in 2014 at the World Ski Awards, and is easily accessible for skiing and snowboarding from Wanaka and Queenstown.
