ANZAC Day at the National Library
ANZAC Day at the National Library – Stories from a Maori perspective
The National Library is repeating its very successful Te Reo Wainene O Tua (The Sweet Story of the Yester-year) storytelling sessions on ANZAC Day, Saturday 25 April, with a focus on Maori participation in World War One and other campaigns.
Designed as a free, family-friendly event, stories will appeal to people of all ages both Maori and non-Maori in a relaxed and informal setting.
Peter Rowlands, The National Library’s Public Programmes Manager says the event is important in ensuring that these stories aren’t lost with the passing of kaumatua or elders.
“It’s a great way for Maori to hand-down a lot of the stories that carry cultural and traditional value while making it accessible and relevant to all sections of our community.
“The value and the success we have had with similar Maori story-telling events highlights the importance of oral history for Maori and how we can all revel in the joy and simplicity of a good story.” says Peter.
Four speakers will share ANZAC stories combining research experience and anecdotal knowledge from a Maori perspective but with universal appeal.
Speakers include:
1. Puawai Cairns, an experienced Curator for Maori contemporary culture.
2. Leanne Tamaki who is the Administrator for the 28th Maori Battalion website at the Ministry of Culture and Heritage
3. Taina McGregor who is the Oral History Advisor at Alexander Turnbull Library
4. Tata Lawton who is the Deputy Director-General Kahui Kaupapa Atawhai for the Department of Conservation
Peter adds “With many of the Anzac Day
events in Wellington taking place centrally, the National
Library is an ideal place to recharge for those who have
attended the dawn service and other events around the
city.”
Space is limited so to attend, please rsvp to events.natlib@dia.govt.nz.
The event takes place on ANZAC Day, Saturday 25 April from 10am (arrive 9.55 for 10 am start) to 12.15 at the National Library of New Zealand, Corner of Molesworth & Aitken Streets, Thorndon, Wellington
