Fusing hip
hop, boogie, and house comes naturally to Adelaide-based
Inkswel, a self-confessed ‘B-Boy’ who plays at the
Matterhorn in Wellington on Friday 1 May. The immensely
talented beatmaker and DJ is a drum machine aficionado, and
it shows in his critically acclaimed releases for cult
labels such as BBE Music, Dopeness Galore, Lumberjacks in
Hell, Wolf Music, Rush Hour, and his own imprint, Hot Shot
Sounds. The globetrotting producer has also collaborated
underground heavyweights such as Recloose, Funkineven, Steve
Spacek, Andras Fox, Iron Curtis and Kiwi-vocalist Isaac
Aesili.
Playing in Wellington for the first time,
Inkswel is touring in support of the album, Superfoods
Vol.1, the first in a trilogy of specially selected albums
of original productions for BBE Music (home to likes of
J.Dilla and DJ Spinna). Packed full of stellar vocal
performance over undeniably sleazy, soulful production, the
LP is simply irresistible from start to finish. Last year
his ‘Cloud Eaters’ EP topped both the Juno and Rush Hour
charts and featured as vinyl release of the week in Fact
Magazine, with all of his releases receiving heavy support
from Benji B and Alexander Nut on BBC and Rinse FM, two of
the scenes most important tastemakers.
This will be
Strange Behaviour and Matterhorn’s fourth collaborative
event, after recent shows with Red Rack Em’ (Germany),
Session Victim (Germany), and Frank Booker (NZ), all of
which have been a resounding success, with our reputation
for good vibes and great music building momentum with every
show. In keeping with our philosophy of doing parties for
the love of it, the door price has been keep to $10, and a
great local line-up also features, with Cosmo performing a
live SP-404 set, Wellington legend Omega B laying down a
boogie and breaks selection, and Flava and Gus in DJ
support.
