Motat Steam Fair

Motat Steam Fair

As we head into the cooler autumn months, MOTAT is preparing to heat up Auckland with its Steam Fair on Sunday 24 May.

This event will showcase steam power of the yesteryear in an engaging experience for the whole family. It incorporates elements of quirky and fun ‘Steampunk’, the fashion and science fiction genre devoted to steam powered technology.

MOTAT Museum Director, Michael Frawley, says “the Museum is home to a spectacular steam collection and we are delighted to highlight it and share the history of steam power in New Zealand with our visitors through a series of hands-on activities and fascinating displays. “

“Families will love climbing aboard MOTAT’s beautifully restored steam trains and tram as they take visitors on rides throughout the day,” says Mr Frawley.

There will be coal shovelling races for children as well as amazing face painting and they can get creative by either ‘steampunking their top hat’ or ‘pimping their parasol’ to show off on the day and take home afterwards. The special Steampunk themed photo area is perfect for snapping selfies to remember the occasion.

“Don’t miss the parade, where everyone dressed in Steampunk or Victorian attire has the chance to show off their costumes. Spot prizes will be awarded throughout the day for originality and creativity, so we encourage everyone to arrive dressed to impress!” says Mr Frawley.

Visitors will have access to MOTAT’s beautifully restored Pumphouse and Beam engine, authentic steam locomotives, engines and rollers, and a team of passionate volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions.

The Steam Fair is a celebration of the magic of steam power, so come along and join in the fun at MOTAT!

MOTAT is open from 10am to 5pm and normal admission fees apply.
