Countdown customers donate thousands to Oxfam Cyclone Pam appeal

6 May 2015: Countdown customers have donated just over $35,000 for Oxfam to help the people of Vanuatu recover following Cyclone Pam.

Cyclone Pam, which devastated the islands of Vanuatu in March this year, left many homes and livelihoods destroyed. Oxfam have been working in the area to provide shelter, food, water and sanitation.

Oxfam New Zealand spokesperson, Gwen Green, says: “During the first few weeks of the emergency, the support of the New Zealand public meant that Oxfam were able to supply shelter and clean water, vital key basics to the Vanuatu recovery effort.

With their support, and the amazing generosity of Countdown customers, we are helping people to rebuild their lives, from their homes and schools to their livelihoods, ensuring communities get back on their feet and are even stronger than before and for the long term.”

Countdown’s Managing Director, Steve Donohue, says: “The funds we raise in our stores are an important contribution to the work that Oxfam does do to help those who need it most.”

“I’m really proud that Countdown and our customers continue to support these worthy causes by giving whatever they can to help those in need, both internationally and here at home.”

Countdown encourages customers to get behind Oxfam and support their Nepal Appeal, following the devastating earthquakes there. Donations to Oxfam’s Nepal Earthquake Appeal can be made at www.oxfam.org.nz
