International Straw Building Conference 2016

International Straw Building Conference 2016

In March 2016 the fourth International Straw Building Conference will be held at the Heritage Centre in Methven. 200 people from around the world will come together to discuss the art and science of Natural Building in the 21st Century.

“Natural building, using locally sourced and minimally processed materials, is increasingly seen as a valid way to build lower cost, healthy, and more sustainable housing,” says architect and Unitec lecturer Min Hall, who is on the organising committee for the event.

“Straw, a byproduct of grain production, is an immensely valuable and useful building material. Methven, in the heart of New Zealand’s major grain growing area, is the perfect location for the conference.”

Today's use of natural materials incorporates both age old techniques and the latest technological advances. Skilled builders, designers and engineers from the UK, USA, Japan, Europe, Turkey, Canada, New Zealand and Australia will give talks and run handson workshops over the five day event.

Registrations are now open on the website www.strawbuildconference.co.nz . The organisers are also looking for volunteers and welcome involvement from the local community, students and young people. Conference development can also be followed on the facebook page ISBC2016.
