Kiwi Stuntman Wins Big on World Stage

Kiwi Stuntman Wins Big on World Stage

LOS ANGELES, CA. 9th May 2015 – Sean Button, NZ Stuntman, wins Taurus World Stunt Award for Best Specialty Stunt, performed in the feature film ‘Fury’.

In the tradition of Hollywood's finest awards presentations, the best stuntwomen and men in the entertainment industry were recognized for their extraordinary performances in feature films of 2014 over the weekend.

The TAURUS WORLD STUNT AWARDS were held in Hollywood on the 9th May. Among the nominees was Sean Button, a veteran Kiwi stuntman whose film credits include Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and recently, Fury.

Sean was nominated in the category of ‘Best Specialty Stunt’ for his work on Fury. The nomination description reads:

“Stunt man is ignited in a full fire burn inside a tank. While still on fire, he climbs out of the tank, hitting the back of the tank, and falls to the ground. The stunt man then simulated shooting himself in the head. “

Other films nominated in the same category included Need for Speed and Pompeii.

Voted for by his peers, who understand first hand the perils if this stunt went wrong, the stunt community agreed that this was the Best Specialty Stunt in 2014.

As Stunts still elude categorization in the Oscars, the Taurus World Stunt Awards are seen as the pinnacle recognition of achievement in stunts for the entertainment industry. The Awards were created in 2000 by Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of Red Bull, and are often hosted, attended and acknowledged by the Hollywood elite.

Sean is estimated to be the third individual Kiwi stunt performer to win this prestigious award. Ben Cooke won in 2007 for ‘Best High Work’ doubling Daniel Craig as James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’. Ben was also Sean’s Stunt Co-Ordinator and was in charge of setting up and overseeing the safety of Sean’s award-winning stunt on Fury. Zoe Bell, who rose to fame as Uma Thurman’s Stunt Double in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Kill Bill’ series, has won three times; twice for her work on Kill Bill (‘Best Fight, and ‘Best Overall Stunt by a Stunt Woman’), and again for 2008’s Quentin Tarantino produced ‘Grindhouse’ (‘Best Overall Stunt by a Stunt Woman’).

Sean is in great demand internationally and is currently working on the Gold Coast on the latest installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
