Fire up the crew, take up the challenge... calling all Kapa Haka super stars
2degrees Kapa Haka Super 12s returns to heat up the
stage on Saturday 11 July at The Cloud, Queen’s Wharf.
Once again, teams of 12 kaihaka get 12 minutes to impress the judges to win a share of 12 thousand dollars.
2degrees Kapa Haka Super 12s, which celebrates
excellence and innovation in the traditional Māori
performing art of kapa haka, is just one of Auckland
Council’s signature events in the month long Matariki
Festival.
Māori Programme Leader, Anahera Higgins says
the competition gives teams the creative licence to produce
a high energy stage performance based on their own unique
interpretation of traditional Māori performing arts
including poi, waiata and haka.
“Auckland Council is
thrilled to present this dynamic competition within the
Matariki Festival again,” she says.
“We’re especially excited by the partnership with Cinco Cine Productions to present the Kura teams who will perform in the morning before the main event. They will be the perfect curtain raiser to the iconic event. The inclusion of these secondary school teams delivers to the growing demand in this younger demographic of kapa haka performers. This year is going to be magic!”
Chair of Auckland Council’s Arts Committee Alf Filipaina says the 2degrees Kapa Haka Super 12s always manages to capture and blend traditional and modern elements, making for some innovative kapa haka.
“It’s a true highlight of the Matariki Festival. There’s a sense of the unknown in the performances and the potential for teams to do and try anything. It’s what makes this event so exciting,” he says.
“2degrees is proud to be partnering with Auckland Council on the Matariki Festival again in 2015. It’s a great community event and we’re excited to be supporting the high energy 2degrees Kapa Haka Super 12s,” says Head of Marketing Communications, Trent Harnett.
Auckland Council is calling for entries now and is especially keen to attract teams from outside the Auckland region. Entries are open to anyone over the age of 16 and close on the 10 June 2015.
