ARTIST
INFORMATION
MS. LAURYN
HILL
Soulfest is thrilled to announce the return
to Australasia of one of the greatest performers of all
time, Ms. Lauryn Hill. Her game-changing
solo debut album which was released in 1998, “The
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” saw her become the
first woman or hip-hop artist to win five Grammy Awards in
one night - for Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best
Female R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album.
The multi-talented singer, songwriter, rapper and actress
began her career with the trio The Fugees
who’s sophomore album “The Score” sold
over 17 million copies, won two Grammy Awards and spawned
one of the biggest worldwide singles of the 90’s with
“Killing Me Softly”. Ms. Hill
stepped out on her own in 1998 and incorporated unique and
incredible sounds from both the past and the contemporary
environment of her youth, and flowed from singing to rapping
with ease to create the masterpiece “The Miseducation
of Lauryn Hill”. She followed this up in 2002 with her
hit album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0.
MIGUEL
After blowing away his NZ
audience in 2014 supporting Bruno Mars,
Miguel returns for Soulfest 2015. With the
recent release of his brand new single “Coffee” and its
edgy, re-imagined alternate version, “Coffee (F***ing)”
ft. Wale, Miguel is currently working on
his brand new studio album “WILDHEART” scheduled
for release this year. Miguel first hit
the mainstream in 2010 with his infectious single “All
I Want Is You”, from his major label
debut album of the same name, a song which blended a hip-hop
beat with Miguel’s dreamy vocals to
create a sound which established him as one of the most
unique and soulful voices in modern R&B. The album also
featured “Sure Thing” and “Quickie”
which both hit #1 on the Billboard Chart.
Miguel followed this up with his sophomore
album “KALEIDOSCOPE DREAM” which featured the
standout worldwide hit “Adorn”, which was the
longest running #1 on the R&B Airplay Charts in the US.
Miguel was nominated for 5 Grammy’s in
2014 and took out the Grammy for Best R&B Song for
“Adorn”. 2013 also saw Miguel
collaborate with Mariah Carey on
the worldwide hit “Beautiful”.
BLACK STAR
One of the most
respected duos in hip-hop, Black Star, will
perform together in Australasia for the very first time on
Soulfest. Composed of rappers Yasiin Bey (Mos
Def) and Talib Kweli,
Black Star arose from the underground
movement of the late 1990’s. They released their
legendary album “Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black
Star” in 1998 on the Rawkus Records label. The album
received worldwide praise and to this day remains one of the
most inventive hip-hop classics ever made. Black
Star’s message carried a lot of weight with their
lyrics focusing on social consciousness and political
issues. Both artists have gone onto have massive solo
careers in their own right, but in 2006, Black
Star appeared together in the movie Dave
Chapelle’s Block party and contributed a new song,
“Born & Raised”, to the movie’s soundtrack. In
2011, the group released two new songs “Fix Up”
and “You Already Knew”, with talks of a new album
in the works.
JAZMINE
SULLIVAN
Jazmine Sullivan is
every inch the soul star. The Philadelphia native’s 2008
debut “FEARLESS” bowed at No. 1 on the billboard
Chart, spawned three Top 10 singles, and saw her nominated
for 7 x Grammy Awards. The album which she co-wrote and
executive produced earned Sullivan a heap
of critical praise, and saw her go onto guest on tracks with
Fantasia, Snoop Dogg,
Robin Thicke and her idol Mary J.
Blige, and write songs for Jennifer
Hudson, Monica, Christina
Milian, and tour with Maxwell and
Ne-Yo. 2009 saw her release her sophomore
album “LOVE ME BACK” which saw production from
Ne-Yo, Ryan Leslie, and Salaam
Remi, and garnered a ninth Grammy Nomination. After
a three-year hiatus from the music business,
Sullivan returned in 2015 with her third
studio album “REALITY SHOW” which debuted at #1
on the Billboard R&B Chart. “REALITY SHOW” sees
Jazmine take centre stage as she tackles the realities of
love, life and everything in between. This is Jazmine’s
first tour of Australasia.
