Manurewa Marae youth group wins
National Youth Award

The youth group behind the innovative Marae-based programme called Taiohi Whai Oranga in Manurewa, has won a National Youth Award at a ceremony in Wellington last night.

General Manager Deidre Otene and her team won the Youth Group Award acknowledging youth leaders and the work they do within their communities.

“My team and I feel really privileged to be receiving this award tonight. It means that the work we’re doing in Manurewa is being recognised for being game changing and meaningful to young people,” she says.

“This award is a reflection of not just us, but all the people we represent, our ancestors and our tupuna. This is about all of us, and I’m so blessed to be able to receive this on their behalf too.”

Taiohi Whai Oranga's approach considers the whole person through a mix of one-to-one support, involvement in education, hauora and youth leadership programmes.

The programme also helps young people develop values, rangatiratanga (self-determination), identity and self-awareness.

“Our ‘Limitless Leadership Group’ has a key ambition to create intergenerational change. The programme does this and the recognition of this model of Youth Development in a Marae setting is the key to the Taiohi Whai Oranga success to date,” Ms Otene says.

“The work that we do really couldn’t have been achieved without the visions of our tupuna, community leaders, and we would especially like to mention the community collaborative Te Manu Ka Rewa.”

Deidre Otene was a recipient of the Vodafone Foundation’s World of Difference award in 2014.

Ms Otene is also a nominee for the ‘I Am Auckland’ youth awards. Winners announced on Friday the 29th of May at Eden Park in Auckland.
