Busy Weekend for Country's Karters

Busy Weekend for Country's Karters

The Queen's Birthday long weekend is set to be a busy one for the country's karters with major regional events in Hamilton, Wellington and Nelson and Blenheim.

The biggest in terms of numbers and logistics is the annual, this year Eyecloud-sponsored, Sunbelt Championship meeting at the top of the South Island with over 70 entries, most from across the South Island, but also some from the North including top Auckland Rotax category drivers Ryan Urban and Daniel Connor.

The Sunbelt championship meeting is one of the longest running events on the local karting calendar with a unique format which sees karters race at the KartSport Nelson Club's The Hits Raceway in Nelson on Saturday then at the KartSport Marlborough club's Cresswell Electrical Raceway in Blenheim on Sunday.

This year six class titles will be contested. There will also be vintage kart demonstrations on both days. Points from both days are then combined to find an overall Sunbelts' winner in each class.

A little further north, at Kaitoke in the Rimutaka foothills, the KartSport Wellington Club is hosting the one-day Bayleys WPKA Championships event at its Wynn's Kaitoke Raceway. The Sunday night prize giving will also include the presentation of trophies and prizes from the recently concluded four-round Bayleys WPKA Goldstar Series.

The two-day Winter Cup meeting in Hamilton is the 'new kid on the block' as far as the three events are concerned.

It is a full two-day meeting at the Kartsport Hamilton club's Agrisea New Zealand Raceway with racing in an anti-clockwise direction on Saturday then the more usual clockwise direction on Sunday.
