Tough Guy Challenge meets its match in deafblind competitor Terry Richards

Deafblind Aucklander Terry Richards is looking forward to celebrating Helen Keller Communication Day by taking on this year’s Tough Guy and Gal challenge.
Terry says having low vision and limited hearing won’t hold him back from giving it his all on the day.

“Sometimes it’s actually easier to just do it rather than dwell on it and let your head take over and talk yourself out of it!” says Terry.

Terry will be among 2000 competitors in this year’s Tough Guy and Gal challenge at Woodhill Forrest onSaturday 27 June which is also Helen Keller Communication Day.

“Ever since I started losing my sight as a teenager I have had to deal with anxiety and depression so the deafblind services team at the Blind Foundation have helped support me on so many levels,” says Terry.

“I’ve found having this event as a goal behind my training has been a big boost in motivation for me. My friends and family are all wondering how I’m going to do it… and why! So I say just watch and see,” laughs Terry.

“I really hope others might feel motivated to challenge themselves when they see me having a go at this event."

The work of Helen Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) respected author and deafblind rights campaigner continues around the world.

The Blind Foundation and Deafblind NZ will join in with international celebrations to commemorate Helen Keller Communication Day.

The Blind Foundation will be hosting events in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin on Friday 26th June and on her official birthday, Saturday 27th June.
