More than 600,000 lamingtons to hit the shelves for Countdown Alzheimers Appeal
Countdown stores across New Zealand supporting Alzheimers New Zealand’s month-long annual appeal
29 June, 2015: Bakers will be working overtime for the next four weeks to keep Countdown shelves stocked and cater for Kiwis’ love of lamingtons throughout the company’s annual Alzheimers Appeal.
Customers can support the annual appeal by purchasing a six pack of Countdown lamingtons, with 20 cents from each sale going toward the cause, or by making a donation at the checkout.
Dementia is one of the most significant and growing healthcare challenges in New Zealand today. One in two New Zealanders are living with dementia or know someone who is and the predicted number of people living with Alzheimers is expected to double in the next 20 years.
To make an estimated 600,000 plus lamingtons,
bakers will use:
6 tonnes of egg (that’s roughly
126,000 eggs or 10,500 dozen cartons)
5 tonnes of
flour
7 tonnes of coconut, which is 3/4 a full shipping
container
1100kg cocoa powder
1500kg of jelly
crystals
In addition to the lamingtons, this year
Countdown has introduced collectible boxes of specially
baked Alzheimers New Zealand shortbread, with 80 cents from
each box donated to Alzheimers New Zealand Member
Organisations.
Countdown’s Managing Director, Steve Donohue, says this year the company hopes to raise more than $50,000 throughout the appeal through the generous support of Countdown customers.
“We have partnered with Alzheimers New Zealand for 11 years now and during that time, $1.3 million has been raised for the charity. Through our network of stores in 176 communities across New Zealand, we are aiming to raise even more funds that will make a difference in the lives of people living with dementia.
Alzheimers Auckland General Manager, Julie Martin, thanks Countdown customers for their generosity.
“The Countdown Alzheimers Appeal is a significant fundraiser for us each year and we greatly appreciate the support of Countdown and the public,” says Julie.
“Donations enable Alzheimers organisations across the country to meet the growing demand for support, education services and information which enable people affected by dementia to live well.”
Alzheimers
Auckland volunteers will also be collecting donations
outside Auckland Countdown locations on July 4th, 5th, 18th
and 19th.
