Hamilton Heads to Grand Tease Final
Hamilton’s burlesque scene is growing strong going by the sold out Meteor theatre on Saturday night. The audience packed out the house to watch the 20 acts performed, two acts per performer, a ‘Classic’ and a Neo’ style for the first national heat of the exciting new Burlesque competition in New Zealand, The Grand Tease.
The Grand Tease NZ is the latest initiative from Christchurch based Tease & Trouble Productions, made up of two of NZ’s top burlesque performers, Ruby Ruin & Bonita Danger Doll. The duo wanted a showcase platform to celebrate the growing and developing burlesque performance scene.
Ten performers were picked from a flood of entries qualifying for the regional heats. Hamilton burlesque dancer, Ruby Spice took out the Hamilton heat plus People’s Choice category and the Biggest Tease category and Runner up went to Hamilton’s burlesque doyenne Ms. Tittle Tattle putting ‘Glamilton’ on a good foot in the Burlesque scene.
“Tell us what you’re feeling now that you crowned Grand Tease Hamilton winner- what does this mean for Hamilton burlesque.”
“I am feeling proud. Proud that I have achieved something for myself by working at it and not letting self doubt win, and proud that I can be a part of such an encouraging, positive and embracing community.
As I find with all burlesque artists I meet, the contestants from Hamilton are a fantastic bunch of people who supported each other behind the stage curtain and in front of it.
I hope this will raise the profile of the burlesque community in Hamilton and encourage other performers, new or experienced, to have a go. You never know what could happen but at least you'll have fun!” – Ruby Spice, Grand Tease Winner, & People’s Choice - Hamilton Heat
The Grand Tease competition heads to Wellington on Saturday 4 July, at the Fringe Bar, then onto Christchurch on Saturday 1 August at the Ferry Ale House.
The Grand Tease Finals are on Saturday 29 August, at the Ferry Ale House.
