Exhibition to Mark 30th Anniversary of Rainbow Warrior

7 July 2015

Greenpeace to Mark 30th Anniversary of Rainbow Warrior Bombing with Exhibition of Courage

Events Also Include Behind-the-Scenes Look at Greenpeace Activist Training

The 30th anniversary of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior will be commemorated with a photo exhibition, celebrating courage and protest, at The Cloud on Auckland’s Waterfront starting this Friday.

The exhibition, which has its official opening at 10.30am on 10 July, 30 years to the day the Warrior was bombed, shows 30 images of iconic, plus some less well-known, moments of protest in New Zealand’s history.

Photographer Fernando Pereira was killed when French agents bombed the Greenpeace ship in 1985.

Running until Sunday, the exhibition, which is free and open to everyone, features work from photographers including Gil Hanley, John Miller and Jos Wheeler, who also curated the show.

The 30 images cover protests in New Zealand including apartheid-era Springbok rugby tours, the Vietnam War, the occupation of Bastion Point, nuclear testing in the Pacific, Maori land marches and deep sea oil drilling.

On Sunday, Greenpeace will be hosting, also at The Cloud, and for the first time in New Zealand, an open workshop showing the tactics, thinking and training that Greenpeace and others have employed before and during high profile protests.

Bunny McDiarmid, head of Greenpeace New Zealand and a crew member of the Rainbow Warrior in 1985, said: “30 years ago the French bombed our ship and killed our friend, Fernando. But they failed to bomb the courage of millions of people. And now nuclear testing in the Pacific has been stopped, because of those people.

“The Rainbow Warrior bombing is one story in our country’s rich history of protest. This exhibition is a real celebration of the courage New Zealanders have shown, and continue to show, to stand up for what they believe in.

“Fernando was a photographer, and this exhibition is also a celebration of the courage of the photographers, like Fernando, who document these hugely important events.”

The photo exhibition is taking place on the mezzanine floor at The Cloud, Queen’s Wharf, Auckland on Friday 10 July, Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July.

The workshop will be running twice on Sunday, from 9am until 12.30pm and from 1pm until 4.30pm, also on the mezzanine floor at The Cloud.
