School holidaymakers revel in great snow at Mt Hutt

School holiday fun and cracking conditions are the name of the game at Canterbury’s most popular ski area Mt Hutt.

Holidays are in full swing, with the second week of the Australian school break coming to an unforgettable end, and Kiwi kids revelling in another full week to go.

The ski area received 10cm of fresh white gold yesterday (July 9), perfectly timed for what’s ramping up to be a “stellar” weekend ahead.

Operations Manager James Urquhart said conditions were looking “absolutely superb” following a recent run of cold temperatures.

“It’s all shaping up brilliantly,” he said.

“We’ve had sub-zero temperatures all week which keeps the snow nice and dry.

“We’ve got very little wind and skies are clear, which is spot on for school holidays.

“Our trails are beautifully groomed and there’s pockets of powdery goodness to be found off piste. First tracks have also been a winner.”

Every day throughout the school holidays, guests at Mt Hutt have been enjoying bundles of family fun activities including face-painting, treasure hunts, colouring in, live music, a bouncy castle, hopscotch and twister on the snow.

Methven’s popular ‘Kids 4 Free’ incentive has brought in lots of under 10’s from around New Zealand and Australia, all eager and excited to hit the snow.

This weekend the fun notches up a gear with a Mini Alpine Series and Junior Interfields adding a competitive edge for budding young snow-superstars.

There’s also something for the adults on Sunday, with Retro Day sure to see some funky, or perhaps tragic, outfits from the past. The best ensemble will win a prize so it’s worth dusting off those 80’s onesies.

“It’s all about fun this time of year, and we sure know how to deliver on that front at Mt Hutt,” said Mr Urquhart.

“We’ve loved hearing superb feedback which has ranged from the brilliant snow to the improved access road, which has bettered the experience all round.

“We can’t wait for the weekend to kick off and welcome our loyal Canterbury skiers, snowboarders and families for what’s set to be an epic few days.”
