My Reggae Song Premieres on Māori Television

A brand new show dedicated entirely to celebrating reggae music will premiere on Māori Television on Friday August 14 at 9.30pm.

MY REGGAE SONG is an exploration of reggae music in New Zealand from the time Bob Marley’s music reached our shores 40 years ago to the modern mix of traditional reggae, soul, funk, hip hop and RnB with sounds of Polynesia.

The show features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with reggae musicians from around the country as well as more than 60 performances from 26 reggae groups and several solo performers. Reggae stars Cornerstone Roots, Herbs and Troy Kingi also feature in the 13 episode series.

Host Matariki Whatarau, who showed his reggae chops off in the feature film The Pa Boys, also performs in the series. It’s a far cry from his role as George Alpert (in the critically-acclaimed Find Me a Māori Bride) who claims he ‘can’t be Māori because he doesn’t even like Bob Marley’.

Director Tainui Stephens says the first series of MY REGGAE SONG was a “triumph” and that having such a dedicated team made all the difference.

“I’m extremely impressed with the outcome of the recordings,” he says. “We made it a priority to ensure that the performances were captured by superior pictures and a pristine multi-track sounds recording.”

Tune into MY REGGAE SONG every Friday at 9.30pm from August 14 on Māori Television.

All episodes will be available online the next day at http://www.maoritelevision.com
