The inaugural Super Sixes will be a big send-off for up to 700 primary school children from across the North Island next month – a “last hurrah” before the Year sixes (10 and 11 year olds) head off to intermediate schools and colleges.

Over four days in Hastings they will play eight sports: football, netball, rugby, basketball, hockey, swimming, cross-country and athletics. All except the basketball and swimming will be held at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park.

Following an Olympic-style opening ceremony at 2pm on Monday September 8, there will be constant action on the sports fields.

“It’s a chance for these kids to go out with a bang; to celebrate the end of their primary school years,” said Hastings District councillor and former Frimley Primary School principal Malcolm Dixon, who came up with the idea.

While most of the students will be from across Hawke’s Bay, there will be students from Lower Hutt and north of Gisborne.

“It is an event that will grow,” said Mr Dixon.

“We’ve got 17 schools coming this year and a good number have expressed interest in next year’s event. We’re convinced this will become a very successful annual event and the long-term commitment of our main sponsors Furnware, Come on the Bay Trust and Sport Hawke’s Bay backs up that optimism.”

Each year there will also be a demonstration sport, this year canoe polo, which will then be considered for inclusion on the main competition list in following years.

It will not be all hard work on the sports field; some schools had already booked extracurricular activities, such as rock climbing at the Flaxmere Community Centre.
