Discover future sports stars at unique Wellington event

Tomorrow heralds a two day multi-sports festival for Wellington’s future sports stars.

Wellington City Council in partnership with Wellington region schools, sporting organisations and the Health Promotion Agency is running a sporting event for Year 5 - 8 students.

This is the first year the event has been run and an overwhelming response has been received from fifty schools comprising 260 teams and 2,200 participants.

Councillor Paul Eagle, Chair, Community Sport and Recreation committee says “this event provides a unique opportunity for school students to experience competition in a supportive environment.

The Council financially supports a range of specialised sports facilities, and the event provides the opportunity for students to experience these”, he says.

The SportsFest will run on 25 and 26 August with Years 5 and 6 competing on the first day and Years 7 and 8 competing on the second day. The competition will take form of a round robin tournament.

The emphasis on the event is fun and fairplay. Sports ambassadors will be at the venues throughout the day providing inspiration and positive role modelling. Sports ambassadors include: New Zealand Olympic Ambassadors Joe Sullivan, Melissa Ingram, Ali Shanks, Anita Punt, Paora Winitana. Players from the Wellington Saints, Wellington Phoenix, Wellington Lions/Hurricanes will also be present on the day.

The event is free and is open to the public. Team managers’ briefings are at 9.30am and each day runs until 3.00pm. The tournaments will conclude with a prizegiving.
