Up and coming tuba player sought

Nor’west Brass is looking for a young, up and coming tuba player to join our ranks.

With grateful thanks to the Lion Foundation, Nor’west Brass has just purchased three new instruments which can be seen in the centre of this picture. Whilst the trombone and cornet have homes to go to, the tuba, which is one of the best you can buy, is looking for a young player to do great things with. As part of our mentoring programme, we have recently enlisted the help of one of the most experienced bass players around, Bob Grimwood, as our official bass mentor.

Bob has won many national titles on the instrument and has helped train some of the new generation of top bass players. Matt Toomata, our Euphonium mentor, and Adrian Dalton, who is doing an amazing job with the learners band, also hold national titles on the bass. With all this experience to learn from, and a top quality instrument, this is a great opportunity for an ambitious player.

Nor’west Brass, based in Papanui, was formed just last year. We now have 25 playing members, and our first set of beginners are progressing up quickly through the bands. Earlier this year we won both sections in the Canterbury Provincial Ensemble championships for the second year in a row, and have extended our concert work which has included joint concerts with a local choir and orchestra. Two annual solo contests have also been established within the band to encourage and extend the players. Next year, we plan to enter our first full band contest and tour to a location somewhere in the South Island.

We are always looking for new members including beginners, returning and experienced players.
