Orpheus Choir sings “Africa” at Wellington Zoo

A captive audience – Orpheus Choir sings “Africa” at Wellington Zoo

Singing in Zulu isn’t an everyday occurrence for the Orpheus Choir, but they’re enjoying the challenge.

“The rhythms of Zulu songs like ‘Hamba Lulu’ are so intense and infectious,” says music director Brent Stewart. “It’s impossible to stay still. And the beautiful harmonies of songs like ‘Ukuthula’ tap into something deep inside all of us.”

Most of the music from the choir’s next concert will sound familiar to the audience, particularly anyone who has had children in the house since 1994.

“We’ve chosen some of the coolest songs from ‘The Lion King’ to perform”, says Brent. “And where better could we choose to sing them than at Wellington Zoo? We may even get some unexpected soloists joining in from the enclosures near the theatre.”

Visitors to the Zoo on Sunday 27 September can head along to the Wild Theatre at either 1.30pm or 3pm to hear the choir sing “Africa”. It’s under cover, so will go ahead rain or shine. Normal zoo admission charges apply, but there is no additional cost for the concerts.
