The second Auckland Jazz Festival opens on 14 October with a degustation of intimate jazz experiences in dedicated concert venues and bars across Auckland.

With over 30 events programmed across 12 days, this is an unprecedented opportunity to hear top Kiwi jazz stars alongside international acts.

Headlining this year are The Prodigal Sons (Sydney’s Steve Barry and PJ Koopman), New Zealand pianist Jonathan Crayford’s Electric Trio, the striking Benny Lackner Trio (US/Berlin) and Wellington eight-piece band The Jac. All will be performing at Creative Jazz Club, at 1885, Britomart.

After a successful inaugural Festival last year, the Creative Jazz Club’s 2015 event will burst into a greater number of venues including the principle venue, Britomart’s 1885, Victoria Theatre in Devonport, the Kenneth Myers Centre, The Albion Hotel, as well as some satellite events in Titirangi and a number of free events across the city at Orleans, Hallertau, The Golden Dawn, The Portland, Café 121 and more.

A new venue this year is Q Vault, which will provide an intimate space to experience The Auckland Jazz Orchestra, Norman Meehan and Hannah Griffin. Also Eden Terrace’s LOT23 will host a smooth blend of world and classical jazz with Carolina Moon’s Ethnos and Jonathan Bessers’ The Zestniks, featuring Mere Boynton.

Other highlights include Nathan Haines singing with Little Big Band at The Victoria Theatre in Devonport, and Rattle Jazz will present a concert program of new music at the Kenneth Myers Centre, including Chris Mason’s Battley’s John Psathas project and Phil Broadhurst Quartet. The fabulous Tessa Quayle will make the trek from Wellington to the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club.
