Halberg Foundation and Flight Centre Partner

HALBERG FOUNDATION AND FLIGHT CENTRE PARTNER FOR WATER SPORTS SERIES
Summer events announced for physically disabled Kiwis

The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation has today announced a partnership with the Flight Centre Foundation for a series of water sports events over summer around New Zealand for physically disabled people.

The Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Water Sports Programme will give physically disabled Kiwis the opportunity to experience rowing, surfing, waka ama, paddle boarding, boogie boarding and sailing at events in Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and Dunedin from November 2015 to March 2016.

The Halberg Foundation is working with national sports organisations, local sports clubs and community groups to provide training, volunteers and adaptive equipment for each event.

This is the second year the Halberg Foundation has partnered with the Flight Centre Foundation for a series of water sports events. Last summer 71 physically disabled people took part in surfing events supported by 212 volunteers at five beaches around the country.

The Flight Centre Foundation’s support this year includes the essential funding required to produce the programme, some of its 1,200 staff will be trained and volunteer at each event and a piece of adaptive equipment will be donated to a local group at each location to ensure they can offer ongoing water sports events and support for physically disabled Kiwis.

Jodie Burnard, chair of the Flight Centre Foundation, says it’s fantastic to be involved in the programme for the second year running and that it’s a great opportunity to give back to local New Zealand communities.

“We’re thrilled to be able to take part in the programme again this year, it’s such a wonderful way to provide these kids with a whole new set of skills and experiences. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for our staff to give back locally, to children who rarely get the opportunity to participate in these type of events.”

“The Halberg Foundation is delighted to continue the successful partnership with the Flight Centre Foundation. This support is essential to us being able to provide quality sporting programmes for physically disabled New Zealanders,” says Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Chief Executive Shelley McMeeken.

“These events have a positive and meaningful impact on participants; from conquering a fear to building confidence in the water and sparking a passion for a new sport. We are excited to be able to expand the number of activities on offer this year to provide even more opportunities for people to be active and have fun in the water.”
