Swipe for Starship And Help Sick Kids

Caltex customers set to raise $100,000 to support hospital ward upgrade

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 12 November 2015 – Caltex today launches its ‘Swipe for Starship’ initiative, where customers across the country can help improve the lives of thousands of sick Kiwi children each year by simply redeeming their AA Smartfuel discounts at Caltex.

Every time a Caltex customer redeems their AA Smartfuel discounts from 12th-22nd November, Caltex will donate $1 to the Starship Foundation. Each redemption will go towards raising funds for Starship Hospital’s upcoming renovation of the general paediatric ward.

Caltex aims to raise $100,000 over ten days which will be put towards the refurbishment Starship’s Level Five, a busy ward which sees over 3,200 patients each year.

To kick-start the campaign, renowned New Zealand graffiti artist Hayley King (Flox) will makeover one of the Starship Foundation’s donated staff cars, using child-inspired designs as the base of her artwork. Flox will be headlining the launch event at the Stanley Street Caltex station, Auckland on Friday 13th November, between 6am-9am.

Brad Clark, Starship Foundation Chief Executive, said, “Every year upwards of 3,200 young patients are seen, treated or consulted by remote by the highly skilled Starship team located on Level 5.

“The refurbishment of this much needed paediatric ward will positively affect many New Zealand children during their hospital stay, as well as providing tangible benefits to staff in terms of a better organised working space.

Three and a half year old Nyah Slade spent months in Starship hospital earlier this year after becoming extremely unwell. She was diagnosed with severe coeliac disease.

Nyah’s Mum, Shannon, said, “We spent many weeks on Level 5 of Starship with Nyah. No one wants to spend time with their child in hospital, but I owe a great deal to the Starship nurses and doctors who quite literally saved her and somehow made her smile at the same time. It’s a special place, and this new upgrade will be amazing for kids like Nyah".

This will not be the first time Caltex customers have supported the Starship Foundation. The initiative is part of an ongoing partnership, with last year’s campaign raising $100,000 that went towards the upgrade of Starship’s operating rooms.

Dean Gilbert, Chevron NZ General Manager, said, “Caltex is excited for this next phase of the Swipe for Starship campaign in an effort to raise funds for a vital facility that helps families from all over New Zealand.

“We are proud to support the amazing work of the Starship team, and especially to play a part in helping enhance the lives of thousands of Kiwi kids through the renovation of Level 5. What Starship achieves on a day-to-day basis is truly inspiring and we look forward to seeing the final result,” said Gilbert.

Clark added, “The money raised from the Swipe for Starship campaign will go a long way to ensuring we continue to provide the world-class care our patients need. Our thanks to Caltex for supporting Starship kids, and thank you to all AA Smartfuel customers who visit Caltex and back the campaign”.

Head into any New Zealand Caltex station between 12th-22nd November and redeem your AA Smartfuel card savings to participate. Auckland customers can join Flox and the Starship crew at the Stanley Street Caltex station between 6-9am, Friday 13th November, for a morning full of paint and fun.
