Invercargill shearer wins big Canterbury double

Invercargill shearer wins big Canterbury double

Invercargill shearer and rising national hope Troy Pyper had the biggest triumphs of his Open-class career by winning the big Canterbury Circuit and New Zealand Corriedale Championships double at the Canterbury Show.

Pyper, who had a big season last year with his first Open win in New Zealand, his first Golden Shears Open final and then selection in the New Zealand transtasman series team, downed defending circuit champion, Tony Coster, of Rakaia, in Thursday’s call-breeds final, and then beat three former corriedale champions to win the national title’s final on Friday.

It was a Southland quinella in the Corriedale championship as Pyper beat 2005 Nathan Stratford by just over 1.3pts. Napier shearer John Kirkpatrick, who won the title in 2004, 2008 and 2010, was third, and first-man-finished Coster was eventually fourth in an unsuccessful attempt to repeat his wins of 2007 and 2013.

Becoming the seventh different winner of the Corriedale title in the last seven years Pyper has now won four finals this season, priming himself for a big challenge in the New Zealand 2017 World Championships selection series which starts Southland in January and ends at the Canterbury Show next year.

Fairlie farmer and World Championships representative Tony Dobbs won the Blades final for a third year in a row, beating runner-up Scott McKay, of Christchurch, by almost three points.

The first day was dominated by the woolhandling events, highlighted by South Island-based Gisborne athlete 2012 World champion and reigning Golden Shears champion Joel Henare regaining the Open title, after finishing runner-up at Christchurch last year.
