We’re out of cake – but we do have a $1mn Lotto ticket!

Media Release 19 November 2015

We’re out of cake – but we do have a $1 million Lotto ticket!

What would you do if you realised you had a $1 million winning Lotto ticket? The answer was simple for a couple from Dunedin – pop it in a cake tin and hide it in the cupboard for a couple of weeks.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, bought the ticket on a whim after ducking in to the supermarket on their lunch break.

“As I waited at the counter, a couple of other people queued up who looked like they were in a hurry, so I let them jump ahead of me. Looking back now, it certainly feels like that good deed paid off!” said one of the winners.

With the lucky ticket safely in hand, the winner headed home and promptly forgot all about it.

It wasn’t until the weekend that his partner remembered they had a ticket, so she sat down and started checking their numbers.

“I was circling the numbers on our ticket and all of a sudden they started lining up,” explained the winner’s partner.

“When I heard her saying ‘oh my god, oh my god…’ I thought I’d better go over and see what was going on,” said the winner.

“We checked off the last couple of numbers together, then just stood there staring at each other. We were absolutely stunned,” the winner said.

After checking the ticket a couple of times, the winners tucked the ticket in a cake tin and hid it in their kitchen cupboard while they worked out what they were going to do.

“We checked it was still there a couple of times every day – we were half thinking we’d open the tin one day to realise it was all a dream,” said the winner.

But after leaving the ticket hidden in the cake tin for a few days, the winners couldn’t resist taking their lucky ticket to a nearby dairy to find out whether they really had won.

“I checked the ticket under the self-checker while he distracted the lady at the counter by buying a bottle of fizzy drink,” laughed the winner’s partner.

“The screen flashed up ‘First Division Winner’ and I quickly took a photo, then we raced out of the store.”

Two weeks after their big win, the winners took their ticket out of the cake tin one more time – this time to take it with them to Lotto New Zealand’s head office in Auckland to claim their prize.

“It’s such a relief, it’s beginning to feel a bit more real now,” said the winner.

“We’re still not sure what we’re going to do with it though – I don’t know if we’ll ever get used to being millionaires!

“All we know is that we’re going to be really careful with the winnings and make sure we can do as much good with it as possible.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Centre City New World in Dunedin for the Lotto draw on Wednesday 4 November.
