Air New Zealand’s 75th anniversary exhibition lands at Auckland Museum

Air New Zealand’s 75th anniversary exhibition, Air New Zealand 75 Years: Our Nation. The World. Connected opens today at Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The exhibition, originally created in partnership with and shown at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa has been extended in partnership with Auckland War Memorial Museum with the addition of a DC-8 cabin and the inclusion of the flying boat pier at Mechanics Bay, alongside exhibition favourites such as the virtual reality inflight experience.

Air New Zealand Head of Global Brand Jodi Williams says the airline’s been genuinely overwhelmed by the success of the exhibition with its run in Wellington attracting nearly 390,000 visitors.

“As New Zealand’s national airline, Air New Zealand has become intrinsically linked with the history of New Zealand itself and it’s fantastic to look back at the growth of an industry, aircraft innovation, style and most importantly the people who have been a part of the last three quarters of a century of the Air New Zealand story.

“New interactive additions offer a glimpse behind the scenes into the world of Air New Zealand and a chance to experience the cockpit and being a pilot.”

Auckland Museum Director Roy Clare says after the highly successful show at Te Papa, Auckland Museum’s version of the exhibition has been enriched with items from the wealth of its own collections.

"Reflecting Air New Zealand's origins in our city, starting in Mechanics Bay on the Waitematā Harbour, we have added unique Auckland stories and developed local perspectives that will capture hearts and minds in Tāmaki Makaurau.

"Auckland War Memorial Museum warmly congratulates Air New Zealand on its 75th anniversary. We join in celebrating this significant milestone by presenting an exceptional exhibition that will engage and delight Aucklanders and visitors to the city this summer.”

Members of the public will also get the opportunity to “pose with the nose” and get inside a Boeing 737 cockpit. The cockpit (nose) will be at Aotea Square from Tuesday 24th November until Thursday 26th November.
