Victoria University’s #wildcats Win NZ Ultimate Champs

Victoria University’s #wildcats Win New Zealand Mixed Ultimate Championships

#wildcats team victorious over local Christchurch team Credo after a weekend of Ultimate played in tough, windy conditions.

This weekend New Zealand’s best Ultimate players descend on Halswell Domain in Christchurch for the 17th New Zealand Mixed Ultimate Championship tournament. Eighteen teams competed in challenging conditions, not very conducive to throwing a 175 gram flying disc around the field with precision, with high winds that gusted throughout the day. Wellington team #wildcats and local hopes Credo qualified for Sunday’s final, for which the wind finally abated. Credo’s fast-paced offence featuring short, quick throws challenged the defence of the #wildcats team, who used their athleticism to play a very different style. Both teams played strong defence and the game was close at half-time. In the second half, #wildcats were able to capitalise on Credo’s errors and emerged the victors with a 15-10 win.

The event was the largest in the tournament’s history, with over 250 players taking part from around the country. There was a great international flavour to the event with Canele, a team based in New South Wales, making the trip across the Tasman and they finished a strong 4th place.

New Zealand Ultimate would like to thanks Tournament Director Craig Morgan for his fantastic organisation. Craig and his team of volunteers went above and beyond the call of duty to create a memorable tournament experience for the players and an event that flowed like clockwork from start to finish.
