Brothers GIF UP Sky Tower to win challenge

Brothers GIF UP Sky Tower to win challenge

Three brothers from Auckland have scooped the top New Zealand student awards in the 2015 GIF IT UP Challenge.

GIF IT UP encourages people of all ages to choose an image from an online heritage collection and make it into an animated GIF. It is designed to showcase the availability of historic images in copyright-free archives around the world.

School students from around the country competed in the event, which is coordinated by DigitalNZ and the Digital Public Library of America.

The Manning brothers – Evan, Jared and Travis – won a total of 5 awards. Evan and Jared took out prizes in the primary and intermediate school sections. Travis won 3 of the 5 top spots in the secondary school student section.

Evan and Jared said they had never made a GIF before. “We wanted to try it out. The tutorials on the DigitalNZ website were really easy to follow and it was really cool taking pictures and changing them into something funny,” the brothers said.

“The competition was so much fun, we learned a lot and the prizes were great. We found that it was best to choose a picture that you like and gives you lots of ideas. We were pleased with our end results.”

GIF IT UP 2015 had more than 140 entries from all over the world.

The GIF IT UP supreme winner was ‘Dissension’ by Tobias Rothe from the Netherlands, who also won the people’s choice award. His GIF was based on Michaelangelo’s ‘Creation of Adam’, but with an amusing modern twist.

Event creator Thomasin Sleigh says she is excited to see this event going from strength to strength.

“This is only our second year running GIF IT UP. It’s so wonderful to see how many strong entries we received from talented people all over the world.”

GIF IT UP 2015 was judged by an international panel of judges: Sarah Schaaf from Imgur, Rebecca Onion from Slate Vault, and Alessandro Scali & Marco Calabrese from Okkult Motion Pictures. A special subsection of prizes for New Zealand students, sponsored by Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand, was judged by GIF artist and illustrator Toby Morris.
