Richie McCaw Film Coming to Cinemas in 2016

The world has been asking ‘what will we see next from Richie?’ and cinema-going audiences will be treated to the answer: Richie McCaw, the film, is coming to New Zealand cinemas in 2016.

The first teaser trailer is available now, online here. (www.richiemccawfilm.com)

The teaser trailer offers a taste of the major motion picture that will release wide on cinema screens in 2016. The film has been in production ‘under the radar’ for the past 14 months. It promises an intimate insight into the man who has emerged as one of New Zealand’s most inspiring leaders. The film is currently in post-production.

Richie McCaw articulates his thoughts on making the film “I was an ordinary kid who loved playing the game of rugby and had the dream of becoming an All Black. I’ve surprised myself with what’s possible if you want something badly enough. I’ve learned a heck of a lot along the way.

I’ve never been big on talking about myself but I hope that by sharing my story, people might be able to find something in it to help them achieve what they really want to.”

This intimate documentary follows Richie’s final 365 days leading the All Blacks, as the most capped rugby player of all time attempts to pull-off his most ambitious goal yet – to end his career by becoming the first person to captain back-to-back World Cup wins.

With surprising openness, the film dives into the mind of this élite sportsman who has spent the later part of his career perfecting the mental strength needed to perform so expertly in the face of extraordinary pressure. We witness the world of high performance sport through the eyes of this legendary player, who still sees himself as an ‘ordinary guy’ from small town New Zealand.

“Being alongside Richie for the past year has been an incredible journey and we are excited to be able to bring his remarkable story to life on the big screen. His story transcends sport and shows us much about the power of determination and mastering the potential of the human mind” said Joint Film Directors Michelle Walshe and Justin Pemberton.

The Richie McCaw film is produced by Augusto with investment from the New Zealand Film Commission, Woodward Trust and the New Zealand Government's Screen Production Grant with financing from Kiwibank.

This is a rare window into the life of New Zealand’s most famous son, who until now has maintained a very private life in the public eye.

New Zealand Film Commission comments “We are pleased to support this special film. Richie McCaw’s achievements have been witnessed on a global stage but never before has the world had such privileged access. It is a story we are sure will inspire young New Zealanders and to see moments that have swept the nation in a cinematic landscape is truly exciting.”

Transmission Films Joint Managing Directors Richard Payten and Andrew Mackie comment on bringing this film to New Zealand screens "There are no special effects required in telling Richie's story - a genuine modern-day superhero. It is a privilege and an honour to be releasing this inspiring film about one of New Zealand's true legends."

The title of the film will be revealed in the coming weeks, meanwhile you can follow the journey here: #richiemccawfilm www.richiemccawfilm.com
