Spring Awakening: A play by Frank Wedekind

Spring Awakening: A play by Frank Wedekind

Imagine living inside a fantastical world continuously mutating and breeding. We place high expectations and faith into our young people from an early age. Spring Awakening, a play by Frank Wedekind interrogates the experience of growing up and the tragadies of childhood, the play will be staged at The Dome at BATS Theatre from Wednesday 27 January - Saturday 6 February 2016 at 7.30pm; featuring an injection of Wellington’s unique flavour.

In Spring Awakening, children are thrust through a state of transition, attempting to find their fit in the world. They are neither child nor adult; they must keep up in a world that keeps changing around them. The textures and colours of their world morph and disorientate as they persist through awkward encounters, experiences and erotic fantasies.

Directed by Samuel Phillips (winner of Most Promising Director, Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards 2014) and Keagan Carr Fransch (winner of Best Actress, Short & Sweet Festival 2015), the play interrogates the process of adolescence to adulthood.

Co Producer Keely McCann says, “Spring Awakening speaks to the awkward and uncomfortable journey of growing up. It asks questions like, ‘how do young people see the world and how do they see adults? What do they like? What don’t they like? And what’s important for them?’ This text incorporates our rich history, present and future in what we understand of childhood.”
