A Film Experience Out of the Ordinary

A Film Experience Out of the Ordinary

Wednesday 13 January 2016

The Regent Theatre is delighted to bring you the Regent Movies.

Regent Theatre Director Sarah Anderson says, “The Regent Movies are an occasion to bring friends, family, or just yourself to the Regent for an uncomplicated and out of the ordinary film experience. People love watching movies here – the success of the NZ International and Banff Mountain Film Festivals every year tells us that – so this simply offers more opportunities for everyone to enjoy a cinema experience second to none in our stunning theatre.”

First up is the delightful classic, Singin’ in the Rain, which will screen twice on Thursday 18th February, at 10.30am and 7pm.

General admission tickets, on sale from Thursday 14 February, will be $10 or $35 for a group of four and there is a range of snacks and beverages for patrons to enjoy while they relax in the beautiful auditorium.

Ms Anderson says, “The Regent Theatre was purpose-built as a cinema in the 1920s – the period recreated in Singin’ in the Rain – so the audience will feel as though they have been transported back in time to be part of the original audience.”

Although restored in full-phase Technicolour for its digital version, Singin’ in the Rain will be shown in its original Academy Ratio format so patrons will be able to see the clever footwork in the dance sequences, usually cut off in TV screenings.

Singin’ in the Rain was the first movie musical to be selected by the Library of Congress for permanent preservation and it still holds the #10 position in the American Film Institute’s list of the Best 100 Films.

During the year, the Regent will screen a range of films, from classics to kids’ movies, from cult favourites to documentaries and everything in between.

Singin’ in the Rain Synopsis

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor star in Singin' in the Rain, one of the greatest and most successful musicals ever filmed—filled with memorable songs, lavish routines and Kelly's fabulous song-and-dance number performed in the rain.

Set during the advent of ‘talkies’, Don Lockwood (Kelly) has risen to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era — paired with the beautiful, jealous and ditzy Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen in her Oscar-nominated performance). When Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden (Reynolds), Lamont has her fired.

But with the introduction of talking pictures, Lockwood finds his career in jeopardy after audiences laugh when they hear Lamont speak in her shrill voice for the first time, until the studio decides to dub Selden’s voice…
