Bike Fest marks a date in the diary for motorcycle riders

15 January 2016

New Wellington-region Bike Fest marks a date in the diary for motorcycle riders.

A big new motorcycle event has been added to the calendar, with the inaugural ‘Shiny Side Up Bike Fest’ on the 21st February at the Kapiti Coast’s Southward Car Museum. An impressive line up of personalities from the motorcycle world will be in attendance and the day also features an array of fascinating machinery, including top drag racer Ian Wilkins and his epic ‘Afterburner 2’ race bike.

The event is being staged by Greater Wellington Regional Council and the NZ Transport Agency in collaboration with the Ride Forever team backed by ACC, with support from all the local councils in the region. Vanessa Rushton, NZTA/GWRC Regional Road Safety Campaigns Manager, says the aim was to have a day that appealed to the widest possible range of riders. “There really is something for everyone,” says Rushton. “Including the kids, because it’s designed to be a family-friendly day as well. No patches, no alcohol, but plenty of diversions for youngsters while the adults are looking around.”

Certainly for motorcycle fans there’s going to be a lot to see and do, including well-known figures to chat with. European Women’s Cup 2015 Champion, Kiwi Avalon Biddle, will be there. US-based suspension guru and regular visitor to our shores, Dave Moss, will be on hand to dish out nuggets of wisdom on bike set up. Also flying over from America is the inspirational figure of Brittany Morrow, icon of rockthegear.org and one of the world’s leading proponents of choosing and wearing the right protective clothing.

Held in the grounds of the Southward Car Museum, there will plenty of interesting ‘bikes on display, including some of the museum’s own collection, plus a discount on museum entry. Other attractions include ABS and Gymkhana demonstrations, and a free, expert ‘health check’ for riders and their machines. Food and coffee vendors, retail and local club stalls and a free BBQ add to the convenience. Meanwhile, the team from Ride Forever will be there, including some of their advanced riding instructors who will be only too happy to help with answers and advice.

Dave Keilty, who heads up the Ride Forever programme, relishes the chance to talk to riders about training. “The Ride Forever training programme has gone from strength to strength,” says Keilty. “But we are really expanding this year, with twice as many providers around the country. So we welcome any opportunity to engage with riders, tell them about the programme and what to expect.”

Looks like Otaihanga road in Paraparaumu will be the place to be for Wellington region motorcyclists on Sunday 21st February. Entry is free and there’s plenty of ‘bike parking on site.
