Mayor looks forward to Wellington’s Oscar-qualifying festival
Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown is thrilled Doc Edge, New Zealand’s Documentary Edge festival, has become an Oscar-qualifying festival, with its top films eligible for Academy Award nominations.
Documentaries which win Best International Short or Best New Zealand Short at the festival are on a fast track to being considered for an Oscar nomination.
“This is excellent news for New Zealand,” says the Mayor. “Wellington City Council is delighted to have supported this festival in our creative capital.
“Films shown at the Wellington and Auckland Doc Edge will be directly eligible for Oscars consideration, giving New Zealand documentaries greater global recognition.”
Other Oscar-qualifying festivals include Sundance, DOC NYC and the LA Film Festival, which are all internationally recognised events, well known for their glitz, glam and memorable films.
This year’s Wellington Doc Edge festival will be hosted at the Roxy Cinema in May. The Roxy is owned by a collection of Wellington’s most well-known film industry professionals, some with Oscars of their own.
Doc Edge becoming an Oscar-qualifying festival comes on the heels of recent steps taken by Wellington City Council and partners towards opening a Movie Museum in the capital.
