Registrations close on January 31

Those looking to participate in the inaugural Proud to Play sports tournament to be held in Auckland this February need to register before January 31.

Proud to Play Sports Coordinator Dion Leslie says "There is still a few days to register and there are 15 sports on offer, so if you want to try a new sport out or put those New Year resolutions into practice jump online and register today."

Proud to Play Ambassador, Olympic speedskater Blake Skjellerup, agrees. "If you're thinking about registering, do it. One of the best things about a sports competition is the sense of community – everyone coming together to do their best and have fun."

The sports tournament is the first of its kind to be held in Auckland and takes place during the Auckland Pride Festival.

The 15 sports are badminton, bridge, dancesport, dragon boating golf, lawn bowls, netball, an ocean swim, road running, swimming, tennis, ten pin bowling, touch rugby, and volleyball. The competitions will be held in some of Auckland's premier venues including the Trusts Arena, the West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre and Pins Lincoln.

A youth hui, Stand Out, will focus on leadership. Held at the Auckland Museum on Monday 15 February, it is free to attend and features Skjellerup as key note speaker.

People have registered from across the Asia-Pacific region, and from as far away as France, Germany, Nicaragua and the United States. Dion says Australian participants are edging ahead of Kiwis, and is thrilled to see registrants from Cambodia are attending. "Brilliant that our rainbow whanau from Cambodia are able to attend, we know Aucklanders will be proud to host them".
