Auckland Eats – Restaurants and Chefs

Auckland City Limits announce
Auckland Eats – Restaurants and Chefs

AUCKLAND CITY LIMITS has already announced an incredible musical lineup for Western Springs on Saturday 19 March with more acts to come.

The event organisers are also focusing on food as a central part of making Auckland City Limits a worldclass festival experience for fans.

ACL now unveils its first Auckland Eats food lineup curated by acclaimed local chef, Che Barrington (Blue Breeze Inn, Woodpecker Hill).

Two years ago, as promoter of the last Big Day Out at Western Springs, Campbell Smith called on Barrington and a selection of local ‘rock star chefs’ to create Chow Town, the hugely succesful gourmet food offering at the BDO.

“I invited Che back for the inaugural Auckland Eats at ACL with a brief to create a pop-up snapshot of the best restaurant food Auckland has to offer,” says Smith.

Auckland City Limits is excited to have the cutting edge of Auckland’s vibrant restaurant scene represented at the festival, with Barrington’s handpicked selection of the city’s leading chefs and restaurateurs all challenged to create sumptuous and unique festival fare in the Auckland Eats food village.

The first six Auckland Eats Restaurants and Chefs:

Beirut – Javier Carmona
Cazador – Darish Lolaiy
Federal Deli – Kyle Street
Mexico – Javier Carmona
Orphans Kitchen – Tom Hishon
Woodpecker Hill – Che Barrington

Beirut – chef Javier Carmona
Inspired by the city of Beirut in it's 1970s heyday, globally known as ‘the Paris of the East’, Beirut brings together an interesting blend of ingredients & textures from the many cultures that make up the Middle East. From Lebanon & Israel right through to East Africa & Morocco, every dish is layered with flavour. Our chefs, led by Executive Chef Javier Carmona, handmake many of the key ingredients everyday from scratch including the Sujuk and Merguez Sausage, dry aged Basturma Beef, Labna Cured Yoghurt, Bric Pastry, as well as freshly baking all the breads served every morning.

Cazador – chef Dariush Lolaiy
Dariush Lolaiy and Rebecca Smidt are the couple behind Cazador, Auckland’s long running, wild food restaurant. Dariush hunts, butchers, cooks and serves wild fare in the same tradition that his father, founder of Cazador, has done since 1987. Rebecca’s smart, friendly and relaxed service guides guests through their unique culinary journey, navigating wild meat, offal and sub-prime cuts all served amongst the freshest, seasonal produce on offer. Cazador recently won Best Specialty Restaurant, and two Chefs Hats at the Cuisine Good Food Awards, as well as Runner-Up Best Neighborhood Restaurant in the Metro Top 50 Best Restaurant awards.

Federal Deli – chef Kyle Street
Kyle Street is the Executive Chef of popular Auckland eatery Federal Delicatessen. Having started his career under the direction of Al Brown at Logan Brown in Wellington, Kyle took time out to travel through Europe and America before being lured back by Al to head up the Depot kitchen. During his travels one of Kyle’s great passions became Americana and street food, the foundations of the menu at “The Fed”. Street will bring his contemporary take on fast food that should provide the perfect form of sustenance for Auckland City Limits punters.

Mexico – chef Javier Carmona
Drenched in bright colour and spiked with bold Mexican imagery, Mexico is an immersive dining experience inspired by street cuisine and culture of its namesake nation. Mexico celebrates the vibrant, fresh and lighter side of Mexican cuisine, with a range of authentic and fusion Mexican dishes served to you in a fast paced and energetic atmosphere.

Spanish born and Sydney raised, Javier Carmona has been working as a chef for more than 25 years. An early fascination with the arts led him to cooking; a creative outlet that saw him embark on a journey, travelling the world and working in the kitchens of Europe and North America.

Orphans Kitchen – chef Tom Hishon

Orphans Kitchen came out of owner Josh Helm and head chef Tom Hishon Orphans’ Christmas with friends in London. Returning to NZ, they fulfilled their dream to open an eatery that was so unpretentious and welcoming you could walk in and immediately feel at home. Orphans Kitchen is a casual space with a simple interior that feels a little like a dining hall. They painted the timber walls the colours of a pale pastel rainbow. The menu itself is short and surprising, Tom is a fine-dining chef who is passionate about creating affordable dishes with simple ingredients. He uses veges like swedes and cauliflower, and more unusual types and cuts of meat like wild boar, ox cheek and tuna belly in dishes that are flavourful and comforting – just as food in an orphans’ kitchen should be. Having dinner here will feel like sitting down at a friend’s table, and that’s exactly the way it’s intended to be.

Woodpecker Hill – chef Che Barrington

After backpacking through Thailand and boarding with families to observe ‘the Mammas’ cooking in their kitchens, chef Che Barrington used his newfound culinary discoveries to launch Auckland's MooChowChow and The Blue Breeze Inn with restaurateur Mark Wallbank. But for their latest venture, Woodpecker Hill, Che’s created a brand new kind of fusion, combining South East Asian flavours with wood-smoked Texan BBQ. The palate-tingling result is smoky, slow-roasted, fall-apart meats paired with fresh and tangy herbs like Vietnamese mint, perilla, ginger, galangal, coriander and lemongrass. Che's exquisite, melt-in-your-mouth BBQ packs all the lip-smacking punch of Asian street food, and won Woodpecker Hill the 2015 Outstanding New Venue award from the Lewisham Foundation.
