Kiwis vote ‘The Princess Bride’ the greatest family movie of all time
Throughout the summer, as Kiwis flocked to holiday spots and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in their droves, Flicks.co.nz teamed up with the NZ Herald to survey the nation’s favourite family films. It’s that time of year, after all, when time ticks slowly by, and different generations find themselves having to reach a compromise over their viewing habits.
The resulting 100 Greatest Family Movies Ever is a mix of new and old; of live-action and animation of many kinds; originals and sequels; and of genres ranging from drama to comedy (or, in the case of one Adam Sandler film, unfunny not-comedy).
Topping the list as New Zealanders’ fave family film is Rob Reiner’s classic tongue-in-cheek adventure tale The Princess Bride. Flicks.co.nz Editor Steve Newall describes the film as “thrilling, funny and romantic in equal proportions”, adding “this post-modern sword-wielding adventure is endlessly creative and infinitely quotable”. You say “it’s number one!” and that’s alright by us.
Also featuring in the top ten are much-loved entries from Disney (The Lion King); the imagination of Steven Spielberg (The Goonies, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial); Pixar (Toy Story, Finding Nemo); franchise starters (Home Alone, Shrek); an Oscar-winning musical (The Sound of Music); and arguably the most memorable screen appearance from the late, great David Bowie (Labyrinth).
We also asked for Kiwis’ favourite characters in family movies, the resulting top spot being a tie between two faces only their respective mothers could love - E.T. and Shrek. Kids had their own say, too, with the children-only section of the poll proclaiming Shrek the ultimate winner.
