South Island Bike Trails in the Running for NZ’s Favourite
South Island Trails in the Running for NZ’s Favourite Place to Cycle
Voting for NZ’s Favourite Place to Cycle kicks off today and the South Island is well represented across many of the categories.
Otago, Canterbury and Tasman trails are in the running for the coveted title of NZ’s Favourite Place to Cycle.
Kiwis can now vote for their top cycle trails from the shortlist of finalists, helping the NZ Transport Agency and Bike Wise discover the best cycle spots in New Zealand.
There are five finalists in each of the four competition categories: NZ Cycle Trail, Off-Road and Adventure Rides, Urban Trails and Commutes, and On-Road Rides.
Voting closes on 29 February 2016 and the NZ Transport Agency, along with Bike Wise, will announce the winner of the competition on 3 March 2016.
The Redwoods in Rotorua has received the highly sought after award for the last two consecutive years. NZ Transport Agency’s National Cycling Manager Dougal List is hoping some new routes will do well in this year’s competition.
“It’s great to see a spread of finalists from a variety of regions and provinces.
“We had nearly 2,000 nominations this year which is fantastic! We had a goal to reach 1,500 nominations so we’re thrilled that we well and truly exceeded that.”
The competition coincides with Bike Wise Month this February, which encourages Kiwis to enjoy fun and safe cycling this summer.
“Cycling is an activity you can do with family, friends or colleagues. It’s a fantastic way to bring people and communities together.”
Prizes for voting in the competition include vouchers from local cycle shops.
