Ministry supporting Waitangi Day 2016 across Aotearoa

A range of events are taking place across Aotearoa/New Zealand giving New Zealanders an opportunity to mark Waitangi Day. A total of $288,000 has been distributed to organisations across the country through the Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund administered by Manatū Taonga, Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Ministry Chief Executive Paul James says the total allocation of the fund was distributed. “This year just over $140,000 was distributed to events at Waitangi with the balance of the funds supporting community events in other parts of the country.

“The fund contributes to a rich and diverse range of events on Waitangi Day itself and in the period each side of it. Feedback from past years indicates the events are well supported by local communities and contribute to a nationwide commemoration of our national day.

“The Ministry for Culture and Heritage is working with other agencies to support Waitangi Day initiatives and events. This follows on from the Waitangi 175 commemoration in 2015 which provided an opportunity to reflect on our country’s founding document and look ahead over the next 25 years,” says Paul James.

Senior representatives from the Ministry will be present at Waitangi alongside and Ministry staff will be attending some of the funded events around the country on Waitangi Day.
