Māoriland Film Festival Announces 2016 Programme

Today at Te Rā o Waitangi, Māoriland Film Festival revealed their official programme for 2016.

Māoriland Film Festival is New Zealand’s premiere International Indigenous Film Festival, now in it’s third year of operation.

To be held from the 23rd to the 27th of March, 2016, this year’s programme features a spectacular range of Indigenous films from the Sami people of the North to our own Māori in Aotearoa.

Festival director Libby Hakaraia said the strong lineup of Indigenous films at Maoriland this year would provide unique insights into cultures the world over.

‘We are humbled that so many high calibre International, Pacific and Māori filmmakers are coming to the 3rd Māoriland Film Festival. They bring with them their films from all four points of the world including Burma, Iran, USA, Canada, South and Central America, Scandinavia and Europe.’

In 2016, Māoriland Film Festival is excited to be showing it’s strongest Polynesian line up yet with films such as Three Wise Cousins, In Football We Trust and Voyage Into The Depths of Kanaloa.

Māoriland Film Festival will also present Lee Tamahori’s new film, Mahana (based on Witi Ihimaera’s Bulibasha), and the high energy South Auckland set Born To Dance (directed by Tammy Davis).

Starring Stan Walker and newcomer Tia Maipi, Born To Dance is choreographed by International hip hop sensation, New Zealand Parris Goebel.

Born To Dance will be one of two FREE outdoor whānau screenings.

Over the five days of Māoriland Film Festival, filmmakers young and old are invited to join us for filmmaking workshops.

With more films and events yet to be announced, Māoriland Film Festival looks forward to another fantastic year in ‘Sunny Ōtaki’.
