The Owl and The Pussycat

The Owl and The Pussycat
Company of Giants - Whangarei
Directed by Laurel Devenie and Ash Holwell

A TALE OF DELIGHT AND WONDER FOR TINY PEOPLE AND BIG PEOPLE, YOUNG PEOPLE AND OLD PEOPLE … BIRD AND BEAST

Taking over Fringe one paw at a time, get ready to be swept away in a pea-green boat with The Owl and the Pussycat. An audacious cat falls in love, a timid owl sings to his small guitar, a celebrant turkey shakes his wiblet and a lonely piggy stands in a wood. This is a tale of delight and wonder set to the dusky hues of a late night jazz club.

Taking Edward Lear’s classic 1871 poem and reinventing it into a vaudeville-esque performance, audiences join the lovelorn Owl serenading his excitable Pussycat in the greatest love story of all time.

Devised and retold by five inventive performers, you won’t want to miss this show. Featuring captivating original songs mixed in with some old time classics, expect tiny explosions, a double bass and a moon you will fall in love with.

‘Endlessly Inventive, Charming, Full of surprises.’ - David Stevens, Theatreview

Company of Giants is a Whangarei based theatre collective who specialise in new devised work, space activation and community focused processes. Previous works include Odyssey (Whangarei, Auckland and Hamilton - first created with Northland Youth Theatre), Rangitahua (Whangarei, Gisborne) and Giant Teeth (in collaboration with Auckland Theatre Company).

The Owl and the Pussycat started off in an old shop front, moved to a disused church and now it’s ready for BATS. “We realised we were making something about the possibility of finding companionship in a lonely world – about being loved for being different. We wanted to talk about a place where things that didn’t belong anywhere could belong,” says one of the creators, Laurel Devenie.

Directed by Laurel Devenie and Ash Holwel, and starring Lutz Hamm, Anthony Crum, Tomasin Fisher-Johnson, Mataara Stokes and Adam Ogle.

Made for tiny people and big people, young people and old people. Hoof, claw, feather, and paw; this is something everyone should've saw.
