2016 Volvo Sailing & Boating Week – Kicks Off This Weekend!

2016 Volvo Sailing & Boating Week – Kicks Off This Weekend!

The final count-down is on to the start of 2016 Volvo Sailing & Boating Week. Sailing and boating Clubs across New Zealand, from Northland to Otago, are gearing up for the ten day celebration of sailing and boating.

“With the spell of hot, sunny weather across the country throughout January, let’s hope it continues through and we have great conditions for 2016 Volvo Sailing & Boating Week,” says Danika Mowlem, Yachting New Zealand’s Coordinator for the event. “Regardless, I know that the Clubs taking part are well prepared and everyone who shows up will have a great time.”

More than 30 Yachting New Zealand affiliated Clubs are on board with the nationwide initiative which is designed to entice newcomers through the door of the Clubhouse and out onto the water.

Club open days and try sailing opportunities are being offered across New Zealand with many Clubs inviting members of the public to come down to meet and chat with members about how to get started.

Yachting New Zealand’s three Volvo Sailing…Have a go! trailers will be involved and are being hosted in the Otago region by Otago Yacht Club and Port Chalmers Yacht Club, in Wellington at Heretaunga Boating Club as well as Evans Bay Yacht & Motorboat Club, and across the wider Auckland region at Little Bucklands Beach, Mercury Bay and Howick Sailing Club.

Yachting New Zealand Chief Executive, David Abercrombie says, “Sailing is a sport for all ages. Sailing and boating are about freedom and adventure, it can be competitive or just for fun and I’d encourage anyone who is keen to get down to your local Club during Volvo Sailing & Boating Week and give it a go.”

With a wide range of activities planned from sailing, windsurfing and spectator opportunities to all welcome BBQs, members of the public are encouraged to check www.yachtingnz.org.nz to find out what’s happening at their local Club.
